Nokia 1100 AND Nokia 1100 Features AND Nokia 1100 Models AND Nokia 1100 Use AND Nokia 1101

The Nokia 1100 (and a closely-related variant, the Nokia 1101) is a durable and very simple GSM mobile phone produced by Nokia with a 96 x 65 monochrome screen. It is targeted towards developing countries and users who do not require advanced features beyond making calls and SMS text messages, alarm clock, reminders, etc.

The 1100 is similar to the now discontinued 5110/3210/3310 models that were among the most popular cell phones in the world a few years ago before handsets developed several new features such as cameras, polyphonic ringtones and colour screens.

Nokia1100 new.jpg

Over 200 million Nokia 1100 cellphones have been sold since its launch in late 2003, making it the world's best selling phone handset,as well as the best selling consumer electronics device in the world, beating Sony's Playstation 2 (138 million), Apple's iPod (170 million) and Motorola's RAZR (120 million).

Nokia's one billionth phone sold was a Nokia 1100 purchased in Nigeria.

As of early 2009, it has been in the news due to a firmware flaw in a batch of phones that were manufactured in a plant in Bochum, Germany. The phone can be programmed to receive messages directed to a different phone number, thus receiving sensitive bank or other data. This flaw was brought to authorities' attention after some phones were sold for over US$32,000 . There is only one source, Ultrascan, that all these articles fall back to.

Features

The 1100 features a built-in flashlight - activated by pressing and holding the "c" key once, or by pressing it twice to lock it on when the keypad is unlocked. It can also be accessed via a menu item.

The 1100 and 1101 are only able to play monophonic ringtones, which can be selected from the list of 36 pre-installed ring tones or from the 7 self-composed ones.

It features Nokia's traditional-style navigational keypad, which uses a single button to connect and end calls, bi-directional keys and vibrating alert.

The Cingular branded version features a built-in AOL Instant Messenger client. The 1100 is compatible with the Nokia Xpress-On covers (including matching battery compartments). In addition to the default light blue, orange or black, there are also a dark blue, yellow, red, green and pink offered by Nokia, as well as many 3rd party covers.

It has been specifically designed for developing countries: its keypad and front face have been designed to be as dustproof as possible, and its sides are non-slip for humid weather.

Other features include a 50-message capacity (inbox and drafts, with 25 messages in the sent items folder), alarm, stopwatch, calculator, 6 profiles, contacts storage (capacity 50, with the ability to assign different tones and icons to different contacts),and games (Snake II and Space Impact+).

Models

There are five distinct variations within the series: the 1100a, 1100b, 1100i, 1101, and the 1108. They differ as follows:

The 1100a operates on the GSM-900/1800 network.

The 1100b operates on the GSM-850/1900 network

The 1100i adds a built-in Nokia prepaid tracker

The 1101 replaces the green backlighting with a white backlighting and adds a simple WAP 1.1 browser

The 1108 also replaces the green backlighting with a white backlighting.

Use

The phone uses a GSM method of activation via SIM card. The Nokia BL-5C battery has a long standby and talk time - this battery is used in more advanced models that have increased power needs for their features, but in the basic 1100 it consumes a fraction of the power and therefore lasts for up to 400 hours between charges. The 1100 is offered for use with a wide range of mobile phone networks. The 1101 has support for Wireless Application Protocol (WAP).

Nokia 3210 specifications

The Nokia 3210 was a highly popular cellular phone, first launched in 1999. A combination of cutting-edge features such as internal antennas and T9 (predictive text) ensured the 3210 huge commercial success (approximately 160 million units) especially across Western Europe and North America. The 3210 can also attribute much of its success to an advertising campaign which was aimed predominantly at young people, a first in the mobile phone industry. The inclusion of 3 games, changeable covers, internal antenna, customisable ringtones and competitive prices led to the handset's huge popularity with those aged 15-25.

Nokia 3210 3.jpg

Dimensions

The Nokia 3210 has a volume of 104cm3 and a total weight of 153g. The handset measures 123.8mm x 50.5mm x 16.7mm (min), 22.5mm (max) and features customizable fascias which clip on.

Notable features

3 Games came preinstalled: Snake, Memory (pairs-memory game), and Rotation. The addition of such games encouraged high sales within a youth market which was enlarging at a very fast rate. Some versions of the 3210 included "hidden" games, React and Logic. They were activated by special software using data cable.

The 3210 was one of the first mobile phones to feature an internal antenna. This distinguished the handset from others which featured large, awkward and unsightly antenna. Reception, although poorer than that of its predecessor, the 3110, was still very good.

'Picture messages' sent via the SMS texting service, were implemented in the handset, allowing users to send preinstalled pictures to one another. These included a 'Happy Birthday' picture amongst others.

The handset was competitively priced and aimed particularly at teenagers and young professionals. This was at a time when few young people had access to a mobile phone, which was generally identified with older professionals and business people.

The 3210 was the first to allow users to compose their own ringtone, a substantial benefit as previously customized ringtones could only be sent via SMS and at a charge.

The 3210 was originally designed with a vibrate alert function. Nokia decided not to implement this feature on some handsets within certain jurisdictions. A few months after its UK release, some mobile phone repair shops offered customers a handset upgrade to the vibrate function for a small fee.

Same battery as original N95 (950 mAh), but the N96 reportedly has a much better battery life using the same battery due to software improvements under Feature Pack 2 (Nokia N95 8GB has 1200 mAh)

No hardware 3D graphics accelerator

No infrared port

No light sensor to adjust screen brightness when outside

N95 classic has lens cover and much more qualitative shutter (N95 8G/N96 don't have this feature)

No manually selected MMS messaging mode. If you write a long text message it will automatically select the MMS mode which could stop the recipient from receiving the message if they do not have MMS set up on their handset. (A Nokia USA employee stated that there is an update in the works to fix this very soon[citation needed]) It's assumed that this automatic selection of MMS mode is due to Nokia's Smart Connectivity)

VoIP 2.1 support for WLAN and Cellular. However, the built-in VoIP client from N95 which allowed the end-user to make internet calls directly without installing any additional software has been removed from N96. Nevertheless, the VoIP API still exists which can be used by software developers in their applications.

The pencil button that is used to mark/unmark items and highlight text is not included. But this action can still be done however, by pressing and holding down the # key'.

Other Features

Browsing

There is an xHTML browser for internet browsing. It is capable of displaying many web pages as intended with some side to side scrolling. It handles mobile designed web pages without scrolling. It handles google.com both in mobile and classic form without incident. Its rendering of Nokia.com was different from a desktop brower's rendering. This appears to be strictly an Adobe Flashplayer related issue.

Connectivity

Getting the phone connected is accomplished by several channels. There is a miniUSB plug behind a cover at the bottom of the device. Nokia does not specify if this device is USB 1.0, 1.1 or 2.0 compliant. This is one avenue for connecting the 6301 to the a computer.

The Bluetooth radio is another avenue for connection. This device implements Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR supporting these profiles: A2DP, AVRCP, DUN, FTP, GAP, GAVDP, GOEP, HFP, HSP, OPP, SAP, SDAP, SPP.

Sideloading of information may be accomplished by way of the microSD or microSDHC card. This device supports up to 4 gigabytes.
